CLASS OVERVIEW

MMA stands for “Mixed Martial Arts” and includes the use of striking with hands, knees and elbows as well as grappling with the use of submissions. The concept of MMA can be traced back to the ancient Olympic games where unarmed combatants competed in a system known as Pankration.

Modern MMA is a mixture of many popular and effective forms of martial arts. They include, but are not limited to: Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ), Wrestling, Judo, Muay Thai, Kickboxing, Boxing and various forms of Karate. When these skills are combined into one “art” or “discipline”, the resulting style translates into the single most effective system of combat in the world, Mixed Martial Arts.

Whether you’re just beginning or working on your way to becoming a professional MMA fighter, SMAC’s MMA program will help you get to where you want to be. This is excellent conditioning training and prepares our students to compete at regional, national, and international tournaments if they choose to do so. however the majority of members attend to get fit, have fun and pick up some skills that will improve their confidence.

Taekwon-Do is the Korean martial art of self-defence and was established by General Choi Hong Hi in 1955. Since then it has grown to become the most popular martial art in the world. Taekwon-Do is well known for its dynamic kicking, but students will also learn how to use their hands, elbows and knees through their training. Our classes focus on the traditional martial art, and include self defence, fundamental movements, flexibility training, sparring, pattern, pad work, and conditioning.

CLASS OVERVIEW

BJJ is a grappling-based martial art whose central theme is the skill of controlling a resisting opponent in ways that force him to submit. Due to the fact that control is generally easier on the ground than in a standing position, much of the technique of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is centered around the skill of taking an opponent down to the ground and wrestling for dominant control positions from where the opponent can be rendered harmless.

To control and overcome greater size, strength and aggression with lesser size and strength is the keynote of the sport. This is done by utilizing superior leverage, grip and position upon your opponent. Students of the sport gain a deep understanding of the workings and limits of the human body.

This knowledge can be used to subdue and control an opponent with whatever level of severity the student chooses. The path to this knowledge is physically and mentally demanding. Students benefit from greatly increased physical fitness, problem-solving ability, self-knowledge of their body and mind and the many social benefits of working within a large group of like-minded fellow students as you learn and have fun together.

Many students first learn about jiu jitsu through the great popularity of mixed martial arts (MMA) competition, where Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu technique is very prominent. Indeed, the beginnings of the contemporary MMA competition were largely tied up with proving the combat-efficiency of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. The practice of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu as a sport, however, is strongly separated from MMA. Classes do not feature kicking or punching. The focus is on safe grappling technique that can be done on a daily basis with no more fear of injury than any other contact sport. While there is a MMA classes at the Scottish Martial Arts Centre, the great majority of students study only the grappling sport and find that this is the most enjoyable and satisfying route to take.

CLASS OVERVIEW

Our teenager Taekwon-Do program, incorporates a more rounded approach to martial arts training by incorporating basic grappling and striking from other martial arts. The students will be in a class specifically designed for their age group and will benefit from our experienced instructors working with them more closely as they develop toward our adult programs.

Teenagers will expect to find more focus on developing key skills required to excel in the martial arts and more focus on fitness and self defence. Because of the focused nature of this class students are more likely to progress at a faster rate.

Today’s Teens are surrounded by negative influences and destructive peer pressures such as drugs, alcohol and even violence. However, studies show that with positive influences and a safe supportive environment, teens can steer clear of the bad and focus on the good.

Many of our teenage students have used this period in their life to remain focused and concentrate on their sport and studies, several have went on to be extremely successful in international competition with 2 Junior World Champions and many other domestic medal winners.

Martial Arts can be used to supplement children’s education and development.

Studies have shown the Taekwon-Do gives children an increased sense of responsibility and self esteem, as well as providing a safe environment for them to release their energy and learn self discipline. Today, Taekwon-Do has many followers throughout the world. It is considered to be one of the most effective forms of self defence and is also a highly effective way of providing mental and physical self development.

At the Scottish Martial Arts Centre our professional and highly experienced instructors look to bring the best out in every student. Classes consist of stretching, patterns, self defence, pad work, high kicking drills and sparring. Classes are interlaced with games to maximise the kids enjoyment and we have the latest martial arts equipment available for our members use.

Results you can expect

Children that study Taekwon-do at our school will gain increases social skills as classes, gradings and tournaments all require your child to interact with fellow students, officials and instructors.

By far the most advantageous skill you child will develop will be confidence, students are rewarded for their training and dedication with reward tabs and the official ITF grading structure. This teaches children that working hard is the only way to achieve what they desire. Tournaments and class awards also allow children to develop the will to set goals for themselves and strive to reach them.

CLASS OVERVIEW

TKD Tigers is revolutionary course for children aged between 3 – 6 years of age. TKD actually stands for “Total Kids Defence” and has been designed as a life-skills and danger awareness course primarily.Through fun activities and role playing games, children learn how to deal with Strangers, Bullies, Emergencies and Day-to-Day dangers, building their self awareness and confidence at every stage.

TKD Tigers was born out of Martial arts training, with instructors and parents realising the benefits many areas of Martial arts training could bring to young children. The TKD Tigers course is actually based around Taekwon-Do, to teach children fitness, co-ordination, balance, flexibility, strength and basic elements of self-defence, when dealing with Strangers/Bullies. TKD Tigers does not teach children to be violent or to hurt others, rather it encompasses Taekwon-Do training to compliment the core teachings and instil confidence, self-discipline, respect, perseverance and courteousness in all students.

The reward based syllabus lets parents set behaviour challenges at home, kids are then given reward badges for completing these challenges from their instructor. With gradings days at the end of each block, kids are also rewarded with new patches, belts and certificates when they complete this confidence building experience.
